Reporting to the Director of AI Development and Systems Architecture, the AI software engineer is tasked with the design, development, and deployment of cutting-edge software systems based on advanced Large Language Models, Natural Language Processing (NLP), and Deep Learning methodologies. Collaborating interactively with solution architects, fellow software engineers, and product management teams, this role necessitates competency in the development and abstraction of APIs, a proficiency in Python and/or R programming languages, and the capability to manipulate substantial data sets utilizing a hybrid approach of SQL and No-SQL frameworks.
Responsibilities include: Architect, design, and deploy AI-driven applications capitalizing on the most recent advancements in AI technology to address complex business challenges. Contribute to cross-functional teams including software engineers, solution architects, and product managers in producing high-quality, scalable software solutions, focusing on performance, reliability, and maintainability. Collaborate effectively with distributed teams, including offshore members, to drive the design, development, implementation, and refinement of innovative product features and enhancements. Continually track, integrate, and infuse cutting-edge trends, standards, and best practices in software engineering and AI research landscapes into regular development work. Debug, test, and optimize AI or Machine Learning (ML) algorithms and models that address key business needs, ensuring their robustness and scalability. Engage in the entire AI/ML pipeline, from problem definition to deployment of the solution, while adhering to best practices in data governance and management. Translate business requirements into AI/ML algorithms and models, connecting organizational strategy with software solutions. Conduct research and collaborate with Yale faculty to advance the state of the art in AI, incorporating the latest findings into developed systems. Publish and present research findings in relevant scientific conferences or industry forums to promote the organization's technological advancement. Maintain and update knowledge of regulations and laws related to AI ethics and ensure that implemented solutions are compliant. Act as an AI evangelist within the organization, building AI awareness and fostering a culture of excellence around data-driven decision making.
Essential Duties
- Develops programs or systems of small to moderate size and complexity. Modifies existing systems at all levels of difficulty.
- Provides informational input into decisions concerning the development and delivery of applications, programs and systems. Defines and analyzes requirements to meet the expectations of stakeholders and intended end user needs, scheduled timeline, and budgetary targets.
- Analyzes, defines and designs new systems and applications. Writes code in support of business solutions.
- Responsible for the creation, definition, communication, and management of project plans which includes architectural design, technology selection and methodologies to apply.
- Troubleshoots problems and provide ongoing maintenance and support for applications and systems.
- Prepares documentation, user manuals and develops formal proposals for new systems and modifications to existing systems. Mentors technical staff and provide training for end users.
- Contributes in the development of policies or modifications to exiting policies.
- Applies and keeps current with existing and emerging technologies and methodologies. Provides ongoing input to the establishment of programming standards, procedures, and methodologies.
- May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education And Experience
Bachelor's Degree in a related field and two years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Skill/Ability 1
Hands-on experience in developing and implementing AI algorithms, particularly Deep Neural Networks (DNN), Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN), Large Language Models (LLM), and expertise in Natural Language Processing (NLP).
Required Skill/Ability 2
Proficient in programming languages like Python and/or R, and attendant data science platforms like Jupyter Notebooks. Mastery of database querying languages like SQL, and experience with No-SQL databases.
Required Skill/Ability 3
Familiarity with design and development of robust APIs using frameworks like FastAPI or similar.
Required Skill/Ability 4
Demonstrated critical thinking abilities and strong problem-solving skills, with an emphasis on the ability to address complex issues effectively. Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into understandable terms for diverse audiences.
Required Skill/Ability 5
Experience with the entire machine learning pipeline from data exploration, feature engineering, model training, model evaluation, and deployment. Awareness of emerging AI technology trends and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Preferred Education, Experience And Skills
Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, AI, Data Science, or a related field and at least two years of relevant work experience; or a combination of education and demonstrable experience that displays a substantial grasp of AI principles and their applications.
